Fluoroelastomer is a synthetic rubber containing fluorine atoms, with excellent heat resistance, oxidation resistance, oil resistance, and chemical resistance. It is mainly used in industrial sectors such as aerospace, chemical engineering, petroleum, and automotive industries, serving as sealing materials, medium-resistant materials, and insulating materials. It is a synthetic rubber with fluorine atoms in its molecular structure.

Typically, it is denoted by the number of fluorine atoms in the fluorinated units of the copolymer. For example, Fluoroelastomer 23 is a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene. Fluoroelastomers are resistant to high temperatures, oil, and chemical corrosion.

  • Fluoroelastomer 23, commonly known as Type 1 rubber in China, is a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene.

  • Fluoroelastomer 26, commonly known as Type 2 rubber in China (DuPont brand: VITON A), is a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene, with overall performance superior to Type 1 rubber.

  • Fluoroelastomer 246, commonly known as Type 3 rubber in China (DuPont brand: VITON B), is a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluoroethylene, and hexafluoropropylene. It has a higher fluorine content than Fluoroelastomer 26 and excellent solvent resistance.

  • Fluoroelastomer TP, commonly known as tetrapropylene rubber in China (Asahi Glass brand: AFLAS), is a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hydrocarbon propylene, with superior water vapor and alkali resistance.

  • Vinylidene fluoride ether rubber (DuPont brand: VITON GLT) is a quaternary copolymer of vinylidene fluoride, tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoromethyl vinyl ether, and vulcanization site monomers, with excellent low-temperature performance.

  • Perfluoroelastomer (DuPont brand: KALREZ) has excellent low-temperature performance, high fluorine content, and superior solvent resistance.

  • Fluorosilicone rubber has excellent low-temperature performance and certain solvent resistance.

Types of Fluoroelastomer

The main types of fluoroelastomer products include: fluoroelastomer round strips, fluoroelastomer round tubes, fluoroelastomer square strips, fluoroelastomer profiled strips, and fluoroelastomer sheets.

Properties of Fluoroelastomer

Fluoroelastomer appears as a white or amber translucent sheet-like elastomer, non-toxic, odorless, and non-flammable (self-extinguishing). It has excellent heat resistance, oil resistance, and chemical resistance, as well as good physical and mechanical properties and weather resistance. It can be dissolved in low-molecular ketones and esters.

  1. Voltage resistance: ≥6.0KV

  2. Operating temperature: -60 to +350°C

  3. Specific gravity: 2.0

  4. Hardness: 70±5

  5. Tensile strength: ≥6.5 MPa

  6. Excellent resistance to oil, solvents, ozone, and corrosion.

Advantages of Fluoroelastomer

  1. Excellent high-temperature resistance: The operating temperature range is from -60°C to +250°C.

  2. Superior oil resistance: It has better resistance than other rubbers to various oils, including high-temperature fuel oil, sulfur-containing lubricating oil, hydraulic oil, diester oils, and silicate esters.

  3. Excellent resistance to strong corrosive media and oxidants: It has better stability than other rubbers when exposed to strong corrosive media such as fuming nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrogen peroxide, and concentrated alkali.

  4. Good mechanical properties, electrical insulation, and radiation resistance.

  5. Good high vacuum resistance.

Application Range of Fluoroelastomer

  1. Fluoroelastomer undergoes minimal changes when exposed to moisture, water, or elevated temperatures. Even if it burns in a short circuit, the generated silicon dioxide remains an insulator, ensuring the continuous operation of electrical equipment. Therefore, it is most suitable for manufacturing wires, cables, and lead wires.

  2. Fluoroelastomer hoses can be used for the transportation and sealing of various strong acids, alkalis, steam, hot air, hot oil, and other fluids. They are also applicable in household appliances, lighting, and medical devices. The working pressure of fluoroelastomer hoses (0.5-3.0 MPa) can be enhanced with connectors and stainless steel mesh sleeve protection layers.

  3. Fluoroelastomer strips are also used as outer sleeves for wires in harsh working environments.

  4. With outstanding high-temperature and corrosion resistance, fluoroelastomer is reputed as the "King of Rubbers." It can be processed into hoses, films, gaskets, (skeleton) oil seals, O-rings, V-rings, etc., and is widely used in aerospace, automotive, petroleum, chemical engineering, telecommunications, instrumentation, and other fields.
