Understanding Skeleton Oil Seals

Skeleton oil seals are a typical representative of oil seals. Generally, when people mention oil seals, they are referring to skeleton oil seals. The function of an oil seal is usually to isolate the lubricated components in the transmission parts from the external environment, preventing the lubricating oil from leaking. The skeleton is like the steel bars in a concrete component, playing a reinforcing role and enabling the oil seal to maintain its shape and tension.

According to the structural form, it can be divided into single-lip skeleton oil seals and double-lip skeleton oil seals. The secondary lip of the double-lip skeleton oil seal serves as a dust-proof function, preventing external dust, impurities, etc. from entering the machine. According to the skeleton type, it can be divided into inner-wrapped skeleton oil seals, exposed skeleton oil seals, and assembled oil seals. According to the working conditions, it can be divided into rotary skeleton oil seals and reciprocating skeleton oil seals. It is used in parts such as the crankshaft of gasoline engines, the crankshaft of diesel engines, gearboxes, differentials, shock absorbers, engines, axles, etc.

The structure of the skeleton oil seal consists of three parts: the oil seal body, the reinforcing skeleton, and the self-tightening spiral spring. Usually, in the free state, the inner diameter of the skeleton oil seal is smaller than the shaft diameter, that is, it has a certain "interference fit amount". Therefore, after the oil seal is installed in the oil seal seat and on the shaft, the pressure of the oil seal lip and the contraction force of the self-tightening spiral spring generate a certain radial tightening force on the shaft. After a period of operation, this pressure will quickly decrease or even disappear. Therefore, adding a spring can compensate for the self-tightening force of the oil seal at any time.

Sealing Principle

Sealing principle: Since there is an oil film controlled by the oil seal lip between the oil seal and the shaft, this oil film has the characteristics of fluid lubrication. Under the action of the surface tension of the liquid of the skeleton oil seal, the stiffness of the oil film just makes the end of the oil film in contact with the air form a crescent shape, preventing the leakage of the working medium and thus realizing the sealing of the rotating shaft. The sealing ability of the oil seal depends on the thickness of the oil film on the sealing surface. If the thickness is too large, the oil seal will leak; if the thickness is too small, dry friction may occur, causing wear to the oil seal and the shaft; if there is no oil film between the sealing lip and the shaft, it is likely to cause heating and wear. Therefore, during installation, it is necessary to apply some oil to the sealing ring, and at the same time ensure that the skeleton oil seal is perpendicular to the axis. If it is not perpendicular, the sealing lip of the oil seal will drain the lubricating oil from the shaft, and it will also lead to excessive wear of the sealing lip. During operation, a small amount of lubricant in the housing should seep out slightly to achieve the most ideal state of forming an oil film at the sealing surface.

Function

The function of the skeleton oil seal is generally to isolate the lubricated components in the transmission parts from the output parts, preventing the lubricating oil from leaking. It is usually used for the rotating shaft of the skeleton oil seal and is a kind of rotating shaft lip seal. The skeleton is like the steel bars in a concrete component, playing a reinforcing role and enabling the oil seal to maintain its shape and tension. According to the skeleton type, it can be divided into inner skeleton oil seals, outer skeleton oil seals, and inner and outer exposed skeleton oil seals. The skeleton oil seal is made of high-quality nitrile rubber and steel plate, with stable quality and long service life. It is widely used in parts such as the crankshaft, camshaft, differential, shock absorber, engine, axle, front and rear wheels, etc. of automobiles and motorcycles.

Application

Skeleton oil seals are widely used in industries such as aviation, automobiles, motorcycles, railways, vehicles, ships, home appliances, and construction machinery. They are suitable for the sealing of rotating and reciprocating movements. They are installed in various heavy-duty engine, gearbox, axle, ship, cylinder and other parts. It mainly prevents the sealed medium (gas, liquid) from penetrating and external foreign objects from entering the machine body.
